Hey guys! I wanted to give you the super simple green smoothie formula we follow along with an easy nutritious recipe to get started!

I remember when I first started drinking green smoothies how overwhelmed I was with what to put in it. There is so much information and recipes out there that ask for 15 ingredients for just one drink! I don’t know about you, but I don’t have the time or memory for all of that!

Making a healthy, green smoothie doesn’t have to be hard. All you need is the basics and then you can have fun experimenting with what you like best!

Here is a little cheat sheet to how Victor and I have been making our green smoothies for years. Just follow the measurements and experiment with different ingredients!

 

The formula we follow is:

 

3 cups veggies+2 cups liquid+1 cup fruit (optional)

 

When we both started, we were adding much more fruit than vegetables, but have gradually decreased the amount of fruit and replaced it with veggies to moderate the amount of sugar we consume as well as increase our intake of greens.

 

There are a lot of differing opinions regarding fruit about if it’s healthy, how much you should eat, and when you should eat it. Some people’s diets are completely based off of fruit,other’s will only eat fruit before a certain time to avoid fermentation, while others avoid it completely.

 

I’m not here to tell you whether you should eat fruit or not, because I think it depends on your own individual goals, state of health, and other genetic factors. But for Victor and I, although we do love fruit, we do try to moderate our intake due to the sugar. The most important thing you can do is listen to your body and experiment with what works for you!

 

Just be mindful, fruit is higher in carbohydrates, calories, and sugars, so definitely keep track of how much you are adding!

 

Simple Green Smoothie

 

3 cups of kale

½ a cucumber

½ a lemon

¼ inch of ginger, peeled

2 cups of filtered water

 

Instructions:

Chop the ingredients, throw them in the blender, and enjoy!

 

If you have a lower powered blender, make sure you chop the ingredients up pretty well before throwing them in. For a higher powered blender like a Vitamix, you won’t have to do as much work. We just switched to the Vitamix about a year ago, and definitely recommend it. We use this one.

 

 

Experiment with different ingredients to play around with textures and different combinations to see what tastes best to you and obtain optimal benefits from your smoothies.

  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Watercress
  • Celery
  • Lemon
  • Ginger
  • Cucumber
  • Bell peppers
  • Purple cabbage
  • Beets
  • Lime
  • Parsley
  • Cilantro
  • Mint
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Raspberries

 

All of these ingredients are naturally lower in sugar than alternatives, and many of them are high in water content and contain antioxidants for an easy detoxifying smoothie!

 

 

For bases you can try:

  • Nut milks: Almond, coconut, cashew (just make sure they are unsweetened!)
  • Coconut water
  • Filtered water

 

Optional Additions for Added Nutrients and Flavor:

 

  • Acai powder or liquid
  • Cinnamon
  • Turmeric
  • Nutmeg
  • Coconut Oil
  • Flax Seeds
  • Chia Seeds
  • Maca Powder
  • Spirulina
  • Coconut flakes

 

Green smoothies are a great way to initiate a change in diet, detox your body, and consume more raw nutrient dense foods!
